For the first time in ALMS competition, the DeltaWing led race laps and thrived in wet and dry conditions with the help of its Bridgestone tires.
Starting on Potenza rain tires on the damp 4.048-mile permanent road course, Katherine Legge quickly passed two cars to move into second overall.Legge was among the first to stop for dry-condition slicks, a move that would help her lead for eight laps.
Co-driver Andy Meyrick later led for eight laps, too, and double-stinted the only set of hard-compound Potenza slicks he used, for a total of 36 laps (145.7 miles) to finish fifth overall.
Katherine Legge, co-driver, #0 DeltaWing LM12 Elan: “I really didn’t know what to expect because we’d never run this car in the rain. Actually, it handled really well and the car was very predictable. The Bridgestone wet tires were awesome, we were legitimately P2. We made the right decision to pit when we did and go to slicks, and we went really fast on the Bridgestone slicks.
We were kind of unlucky at the end because I think we would’ve finished second, but there was a yellow flag and that allowed everybody to make it on fuel. We feel like we finished second anyway.”
Andy Meyrick, co-driver, #0 DeltaWing LM12 Elan: “To say we are disappointed not to finish second just shows how far we’ve come in this project. It’s been an incredible job from the start of the season. I’m a bit tired after that stint. I pushed so hard, I couldn’t get any more. The Bridgestones held up fantastically.
We were able to double stint, which was brilliant. This track is not easy – a lot of people really struggled this weekend with tire degradation – and we were still going mega-quick at the end of the stint. The tires were phenomenal. I’m really, really happy with the performance of the Bridgestones.”
