FERNANDEZ FASTEST - OFFICIALLY - IN OPENING PRACTICE
Unclassified butanol-powered Dyson entry posts best time
Adrian Fernandez turned in the best time in the first official practice session Friday morning for the Monterey Sports Car Championships presented by Patron. The Mexican driving legend turned a best lap of 1:13.311 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and the final race of the American Le Mans Series season.
Dyson Racing's Guy Smith was quickest in the session in the Mazda-powered Lola B09/86 that he is driving with Chris Dyson and Ben Devlin. His best lap was a 1:13.096 (110.222 mph) for a 0.215-second edge over the Fernandez car. The entry, however, is running on an experimental butanol blend that is not an approved fuel for competition although the possibility remains that it could be made fully legal for 2010.
Fernandez is sharing the Lowe's Fernandez Racing Acura ARX-01b with Luis Diaz. The pairing wrapped up the LMP2 championship at Mosport in August and can tie a class record with their eighth victory of the season Saturday.
Corsa Motorsports' Stefan Johansson was the quickest LMP1 entry in the hybrid-powered Ginetta-Zytek 09HS. Johansson, the pole-winner for the 2006 race in a Zytek prototype, turned a best lap of 1:14.521 (108.114 mph) in the car that he will share with Johnny Mowlem.
Drayson Racing's Lola B09/60-Judd was second in P1 thanks to Jonny Cocker's lap of 1:15.224 (107.104 mph). He will drive the team's new coupe with team owner Paul Drayson.
In GT2, Corvette Racing's Olivier Beretta set the fastest time in class with a 1:24.120 (95.777 mph). He and teammate Oliver Gavin are racing at the circuit for the first time in GT2, having claimed GT1 victories in 2005, 2007 and 2008.
BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team sat second with Joey Hand's lap of 1:24.185 (95.704 mph) in the BMW M3 that he will drive with Bill Auberlen. The two were class winners at Road America. Risi Competizione's Jaime Melo was third in the Ferrari F430 GT that he is driving with Pierre Kaffer. His time was 1:24.198 (95.689 mph).
ORBIT Racing's Guy Cosmo was the fastest Challenge class driver in the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup entry that he will drive with John Baker. Cosmo, a former LMP2 winner in the Series, posted a best time of 1:29.913(89.607 mph). Cosmo was 0.241 seconds quicker than James Sofronas in GMG Racing's entry with Bret Curtis.
