San Diego: Supercross preview

AURORA, Ill. (December 19, 2001) - The 2002 season of EA SPORTS Supercross Presented by Speed Stick returns San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium January 12 as round two of the tour's Southern California swing brings in the greatest supercross riders on the planet. Moreover, Qualcomm is seven-time supercross champion Jeremy McGrath's hometown race.

Press Day will be held on Thursday, January 10 from Noon-2:00 at Qualcomm Stadium, with Jeremy McGrath, local team Motoworld.com Racing (El Cajon), and San Diego-based factory KTM. Media will have opportunities to interview of photograph the riders of their choice. Following the press conference, the riders will do a riding demonstration, as they launch three stories high and 70' in distance over the massive triple jump.

The San Diego event is one of four rounds of EA SPORTS Supercross that will be hosted in Southern California. The other Southern California rounds will be at Anaheim's legendary Edison International Field on: January 5, January 19, and February 2.

Last season Qualcomm Stadium was the site of eventual champion Ricky Carmichael's first win of his career in stadium competition. In the 20-lap main event, Carmichael offset the seemingly unbeatable McGrath in what is considered the greatest upset of all time. A hungry McGrath is determined to win not only in front of his hometown, but also at the rest of the 16-round tour's other venues.

The second round of the 125cc Western Regional Supercross tour will take place on this weekend as well. The biggest story to come out of this division is 16-year-old rookie standout James Stewart, who brings his career racing record of most amateur championship to Qualcomm Stadium.
