Pumpelly Third in ARCA Debut at New Jersey Motorsports Park

Millville, New Jersey (Sept. 14, 2009) - Spencer Pumpelly drove the TRG Motorsports No. 09 Hybrid Public Transport Chevrolet to a third place finish in today's running of the ARCA RE/MAX Series South Jersey Building Trades 150 race at New Jersey Motorsports Park.

Pumpelly started his first ARCA RE/MAX race from third, even though he qualified fifth. A couple of competitors were forced to start at the back due to engine changes. The start had Pumpelly moving up and running in second for a good part of the first quarter of the event and led five laps on the day. A late restart had the Virginia native moving up from fifth to finish the day in third.

"The start was good," Pumpelly said. "We had moved up a few positions because guys had to go to the back. So I took the green in third. I moved up to second early and settled into a pace behind Patrick (Long, Porsche factory driver, yearlong ARCA competitor and eventual winner). I was happy with the way the car was driving, especially through the faster parts of the track. We were really good. We got some early yellows, but then the race settled into a nice long green flag run. I thought we would finish under green and then a caution came out at the end. We had a restart with five to go. I was fifth and was able to move up to third at the checker.

"We did two pit stops. The first one was really good. The second one we lost a little a track position and went from second to fifth. I was able to get back up to third in the last run to the checker.

"The only thing that went wrong all weekend was that the shift knob broke off on about the third lap. I ended up shifting the car with the threaded part of the lever the whole race. My hand hurts a little right now. I think I can see straight through my hand.

"I heard these races get wild at the end and it certainly did. It was just what I thought. The TRG Motorsports guys were really prepared and it was a ton of fun.

TRG Motorsports team principal, Kevin Buckler, is very happy with Pumpelly's performance.

"Spencer had a great first stock car race," Buckler said. "He had a good start, settled in and ran strong and smart. His pit stops were right on and he ran up at the front the entire race. Andy Lally was spotting and together we had a great strategy and he brought the car home in third. Tim (Reid, crew chief) had the car in great shape every session and everything just went to plan all weekend."
