NOTES OF INTEREST: The Eddie Gilstrap Motors ARCA Fall Classic will by the 67th appearance of the ARCA RE/MAX Series at Salem. Salem has been a staple on the RE/MAX Series schedule since 1955 when Jack Harrison won the inaugural event in a Ford. Jack Bowsher is the all-time Salem winner with 5 wins while local favorite Frank Kimmel and Tim Steele trail in that category with 4 victories each. Former RE/MAX Series and Winston Cup champion Benny Parsons has 2, as does veteran Bob Strait. Additional notable RE/MAX Series winners at Salem include Winston Cup champion Bobby Allison, 6-time RE/MAX Series champion Iggy Katona, '52 Indy 500 winner Troy Ruttman, USAC stock car veteran Don White and Winston Cup regular Ken Schrader to name a few. Schrader, an 8-time ARCA RE/MAX Series winner, won at Salem in '99. Schrader has entered a Federated Auto Parts Pontiac for this year's classic, however, because of a Winston Cup commitment at Richmond Int'l Raceway on Saturday, 99 ARCA RE/MAX champ Bill Baird will qualify Schrader's car. Kimmel (98 & 00) and Tracy Leslie (88) are the only former ARCA RE/MAX champions entered for the race. Shelby Howard, who turned 16 on July 25, 2001, will become the youngest driver in the 49-year history of the ARCA RE/MAX Series when the Greenwood IN driver debuts in the Lucas Oil-Mack Trucks sponsored Chevy Monte Carlo. Jason Jarrett, son of 99 Winston Cup champ Dale Jarrett, will make his second appearance at Salem. Jarrett, currently 2nd in points, finished 4th here in the Spring. Current point leader Kimmel has won 8 races so far this year including last time out on the DuQuoin IL dirt-mile. In addition, Kimmel has led 1,146 laps in 17 races in 2001.
