NOTES OF INTEREST: The Eddie Gilstrap Motors 200 Fall Classic presented by Federated Auto Parts is the 65th ARCA Bondo/Mar-Hyde Series event held at Salem dating back to 1955 when Jack Harrison won in a Ford. Defending race winner Ken Schrader has entered his own Federated Auto Parts Chevrolet. Additional entrants include current point leader & ’98 ARCA champ Frank Kimmel and 3-time ARCA champ Tim Steele (3rd in points). 15-time ARCA winner and 2nd in points Bob Strait is entered as is leading Prestone Rookie of the Year candidate Brian Ross (4th in points) of Plymouth, Indiana. Shawna Robinson, making only her 2nd Salem appearance, is also entered in the Kmart Ford Taurus along with ’99 Daytona ARCA 200 winner Bobby Gerhart (5th in points), Winder, Georgia veteran Mark Gibson, 19-time ARCA winner Bob Schacht, Norm Benning, Joe Cooksey, Curt Piercy, Ron Cox and Cavin Councilor. This year’s event will come in a 2-day format to include Talladega Pole Award Qualifying on Saturday along with the UHL Truck Sales 100 for the ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series. Saturday evening festivities include the Washington County Pork Producers Dinner from 5:30 to 7 PM followed by live music from Louisville, Kentucky’s Norman Rocks Well classic rock band. On Sunday, a Jasper Engines & Transmissions on-track Autograph Hour will precede the race from 12 noon to 1 PM with the Eddie Gilstrap Motors 200 to follow at 2 PM. Benny Parsons sat on the pole at Salem every race from April 1968 through September of '69 for a total of 7 consecutive Talladega Pole Awards, more than any other ARCA driver in Salem Speedway history. Schacht won the last 500-lapper held at Salem on 10/8/89 driving a Buick, the last Buick to win here.
