HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (July 24, 2002) -- The CART Toyota Atlantic Championship announced today its mid-season payout of the $1,000,000 points fund. Jon Fogarty (Dorricott Racing/Thomas Fogarty Winery & Vineyards Swift 014.a), with a total of 74 points following the CART Grand Prix of Chicago, earned $47,193.88 of the $500,000 payout.

"The 2002 season is the first time that the CART Toyota Atlantic Championship Series has had a $1,000,000.00 points fund," quoted CEO and President, Vicki O'Connor from her Highland Park, Illinois Pro-Motion Agency office. "By paying out $500,000 at the half way point, we feel that we are providing the teams with an important influx of income at a point in the season where this income is most useful to them. The remaining $500,000.00 will be dispersed at the end of the season based on points earned in the second half of the season - Toronto through Denver. The total prize money for the 2002 season exceeds $2,200,000.00, a new record for CART Toyota Atlantic."

In addition to the money earned in the points fund, Fogarty had also won $63,500 in race winnings following the Chicago event, second only to the $66,500 earned by Ryan Hunter-Reay (Hylton Motorsports /Medlock Ames Winery/U.S. Print Swift 014.a).

The season is now entering its stretch run with the final four races of the 2002 campaign taking place during the month of August. Michael Valiante (Lynx Racing Swift 014.a) now leads in the Championship with 101 points, but is followed closely by Hunter-Reay and Fogarty with 93 and 92 points respectively.
