CONCORD, N.C. (Aug. 11, 2001) - Matt Newsom, a former general manager of professional baseball and hockey franchises, has joined the staff of Lowe's Motor Speedway as director of customer services and logistics.
Newsom, 37, will replace Mike Overcash who has guided the track's customer services and logistics department for four years, but will retire following the Oct. 11 UAW-GM Quality 500 NASCAR Winston Cup event.
"Matt's management background in minor-league sports has prepared him extremely well for his new position here at the speedway," said Doug Stafford, executive vice president of Lowe's Motor Speedway. "The very nature of a minor-league franchise forces management to emphasize customer services and streamline logistics, points that are also extremely important in hosting a major motorsports event."
Newsom began his professional sports career with the Winston-Salem Spirits and eventually served as general manager and director of operations for the Carolina League baseball team. He then switched to professional hockey where he was vice president of the New Haven (Conn.) Nighthawks and then the Hamilton (Ont.) Canucks.
He most recently served as president and CEO of MWN Sports Enterprises/ CoachingSports.net, a Charlotte-based company that develops and publishes instructional materials for sports coaches.
A native of Starkville, Miss., Newsom graduated from Davidson College in Davidson, N.C., in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. He and his wife, Martha, live in Charlotte, N.C., and have two sons, 4-year-old Jack and 1-year-old Will.
