McAnally brings championship team home to Northern California

January 19, 2002 (ROSEVILLE, Calif.) -- After being based in Las Vegas for the past two year, Bill McAnally has moved his NASCAR Winston West Series championship race team back to Northern California.

The move is something of a homecoming for the NAPA/Martin Senour-sponsored team -- which up until two years ago had operated as Bill McAnally Racing out of a shop near McAnally's home in Roseville, Calif.

"I'm very excited about this opportunity to bring our championship team back to Northern California," McAnally said. "This is where we initially built this team and it remains home to many of its members."

Following the 1999 season, in which the team won its first of three consecutive series championships, McAnally formed a partnership with casino owner Michael Gaughan to create Orleans Racing and relocate his team to Las Vegas. The success of the team continued -- winning series championships with driver Brendan Gaughan in 2000 and again in 2001.

McAnally, who as a car owner has continually grown his racing operation each of the 10 years he has been in the West Coast series, is expanding his program into a second NASCAR series full time for 2002. The Las Vegas-based Orleans Racing program and Gaughan are graduation to the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, with former Winston West crew chief Shane Wilson serving as manager/crew chief. Orleans Racing will operate its NASCAR Winston West Series effort, meanwhile, out of a new shop near Roseville.

"While we look forward to the challenges ahead for our team in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, we also look forward to continued success in the NASCAR Winston West Series," McAnally said. "Winning a fourth championship would be a very tough accomplishment, but that's what we are shooting for."

Austin Cameron has been named as the driver of the NAPA/Martin Senour Chevrolet for the 2002 season. Cameron, 24, won the NWWS Rookie-of-the-Year Award in his freshman season in 1998. The El Cajon, Calif., competitor finished in the top three of the championship standings in the two years he competed full-time in the series since then.

"We are pleased to have Austin join the team," McAnally said. "I've watched him since he came into the series in 1998 and I'm confident he has what it takes to be a champion. I think he will be a great Representative of NAPA Auto Parts, Martin Senour Paint and the rest of our sponsors," McAnally added. "He has a great and enthusiastic following with the fans."

In addition to fielding the NAPA/Martin Senour Chevrolet, the Orleans Racing team will prepare MBNA sponsored Chevrolets for series rookie Brett Thompson of Jerome, Idaho.

The first race on the 2002 schedule for the NASCAR Winston West Series is at Phoenix International Raceway on February 2.
