Rockingham International record to be broken

Rockingham International Circuit Lap Record set to be broken at the PowerTour weekend.

The present lap record for Rockingham's International circuit held by National Supersport competitor Paul Gibson (1m43.113s / 89.37mph) looks set to be shattered after Britain's Anthony Davidson was the fastest driver during Saturday qualifying.

The Carlin Motorsport Formula 3 driver pushed his Dallara F301 Mugen Honda to record a time of 1m33.524 at an average speed of 98.54mph in the second qualifying session of the day. "I just wanted it to rain," the 2000 Autosport Young Driver of the Year award winner admitted after 30 minute qualifying period. "It's such a lottery in those conditions. We dominated at Pau and now we've done it again here."

In the earlier qualifying session Northern Irelands Derek Hayes took pole position for the first of Sunday's two Formula 3 races with a time of 1m33.896 (98.15mph). "I'm very happy being on pole," said the Northamptonshire based Irishman. "Everyone wrote me off after testing, but I always lift my game when it counts."

Hayes and Davidson were the only two drivers to post a sub 1 minute 34 second lap during the two sessions. The first British Formula 3 race is due to start at 11:30 on Sunday morning, with the second race due at 15:30.
