LA CANADA, Calif. (October 13, 2001) - Team Honda's Ricky Carmichael became the first rider in THQ U.S. Open history to win back-to-back championships, as he swept both motos during the two-day event in front of an overcapacity sold-out Las Vegas crowd.

Carmichael made his way to the first corner ahead of Suzuki riders Kevin Windham and Travis Pastrana, earning the PowerAde Powershot. Meanwhile, Tim Ferry, who finished second last night, tangled with Mike LaRocco and went down, forcing him to start close to last place. Jeremy McGrath failed to cut his string of bad luck. McGrath also fell victim to a bad start. "Once again I was playing catch-up," said McGrath. "I wish I could have gotten a better start and battled with Carmichael. I came here to use this event as a gauge for 2002, and I feel that I am in great shape. 2002 is going to be a great year."

The Pastrana-Windham battle evolved late in the race until Pastrana went down in the whoops in an attempt to pass his teammate Windham.

"I was riding pretty tight out there, and when I do that I usually have a hard time breathing," said Windham. "It is hard to put in a good ride when you can't breath."

As Carmichael continued to extend his lead, McGrath inspired the sold-out MGM Grand crowd, racing his way into second place. Windham finished third. "This race is all about starts," said Carmichael. "I surprised myself this weekend; I have only been on the bike eight times. I am going to donate some of this money to the Red Cross to help the families affected by they September 11th attacks."
THQ U.S. Open Overall Results 1) Ricky Carmichael 2) Jeremy McGrath 3) Kevin Windham 4) Mike LaRocco 5) Tim Ferry 6) Nick Wey 7) Mike Brown 8) Travis Pstrana 9) Brock Sellards 10) Kelly Smith 11) Josh Demuth 12) Steve Lamson 13) Ryan Clark 14) Darcey Lange 15) Isaiah Johnson 16) Doug Dehaan 17) Jason McCormick 18) Buddy Antunez 19) Damon Huffman 20) Turbo Reif 21) Denny Stephenson 22) Robbie Skaggs 23) John Dowd 24) Ryan Terlecki
Next year's THQ U.S. Open will be held on October 11th, 12th, and 13th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
