Wind Causes Problems At Gold Cup Unlimited Hydroplane Race
DETROIT--Wind is once again playing havoc in Detroit for the 100th running of the Chrysler Jeep Superstores APBA Gold Cup.
Just a year ago, racing was suspended due to high winds. And as for Saturday, the same was the case in the 2009 race.
Officials were able to get the first flight of elimination heats in early Saturday afternoon. But as the last boats were hoisted onto the docks, the winds picked up and the boats were relegated once again to the docks.
"We could run if this was 4:20 p.m. (Sunday)," Steve David, driver of the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto said during the wind delay Saturday suggesting that boats could take the water if it was time for the final heat. "Right now we just want to preserve the equipment to run a good final."
Winds were gusting over 25 mph out of the west, up the river, causing three to four foot swells.
"You just don't see them until you hit them," David said. "That is when you say 'that was a big one,'"
David in the Oh Boy! Oberto and David Villwock in the Ellstrom Elam Plus both won their respective elimination heats earlier Saturday afternoon.
Elimination heat racing will start at 10:45 Sunday with the championship at 4:30. And winds are expected to be lighter and out of the north making for great racing conditions.
