Subaru BMR team boss gives up BTCC drive

The boss of the Subaru BTCC team, Warren Scott, will step down as one of his squad's drivers for 2017, and will enter the British Rallycross Championship instead.

Scott will continue in his role as team principal for Team BMR, which has yet to announce who - if anyone - will drive the squad’s fourth Subaru Levorg alongside Jason Plato, Ashley Sutton and James Cole.

Team BMR was founded by Scott and entered BTCC in 2013, with the former British Superbike rider as its sole driver, but it went on to become a four-car outfit by the end of the next campaign before entering a tie-up with Subaru for the 2016 season.

In that time, Scott took three top-10 finishes, with ninth as his best result.

The 45-year-old said he quit BTCC as a driver because of having to divide his attention between running the team and focusing on his racing compromised his performance.

"Although I had a very strong team behind me in the BTCC, I found it increasingly difficult to concentrate on my own racing when I had to also focus on the team’s performance and results as a whole," said Scott.

"Having numerous cars on the grid meant that I could never fully centre my attention on my own race as there was always something going on.

"The BTCC is so competitive, often the top 20 are covered by just a second and there is no room for error, you must be 100 percent focused, 100 percent of the time.

"I will be competing in British RX this season, I will however remain 100 percent hands on as team principal and am fully committed to Team BMR and Subaru in the BTCC."

Scott will race an LD Motorsports-run RCiB-sponsored Citroen DS3 Supercar in British RX, and has already tested with the team, which is owned by Liam Doran.

He will race the DS3 Supercar that Norwegian FIA WRX star Andreas Bakkerud drove to claim two victories in the European Rallycross Championship in 2013, and youngest ever British RX champion Dan Rooke used last year.

Scott will undertake another test session before the opening round at Croft Circuit next week.

"The Citroen was unbelievable and I felt at home in the car straight away," he added. "I’m really looking forward to this new personal challenge and to working with LD Motorsports.”
