MISSED GEAR CAN'T STOP GOOD RUN FOR CRAMP AT ORAN PARK

CVW Manta Racing driver Steve Cramp today just missed a shot at a strong top five position in the opening 10-lap race in round five of the Donut King Australian Performance Car Championship at Oran Park Raceway in Sydney.

In a much improved performance from the team's VZ HSV GTS Commodore, Adelaide based Cramp ran as high as seventh in today's race before ruing a missed gear change that cost him a shot at a possible top five position, eventually dropping to a solid 10th place at the end of the shortened ten lap race.

The solid finish -- and strong indication of considerable race pace -- raised hopes around the CVW Engineering pit area after a torrid run of luck and reliability at the previous round of the championship in Darwin.

"A reasonable day today, its good to get a solid finish and prove the race pace we have had all season," Cramp explained.

"Unfortunately, I missed a gear on lap six which caused me to run off the road and drop a few positions when I was closing on the battle that was ahead of me. As it turns out, the guys in front had a coming together just after and I would've been able to drive right through it and get a great top five finish, but that's the way it panned out."

After showing signs of the potential within the team's HSV all season, Cramp was somewhat relieved to have been able to make good forward progress in a race.

"The car has got tremendous race pace," he said. "We have been working all weekend to get a good race setup instead of a all out qualifying effort, and it's paid off today. Tomorrow we should be able to continue today's work and hopefully end up in the top five by the end of tomorrow's races'."

The progress in today's race came after a difficult qualifying session Friday afternoon, 12th place coming after a wrong shock absorber setting upset the handling balance of the car.

Tomorrow's two races that are set to conclude the fifth round of the series are scheduled for 10:00am and 16:55pm respectively (Australian Eastern Time).
