Evangelou maintains Top 10 place
DEXION Racing's Tony Evangelou has maintained his position towards the front of the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series after the second round at Wakefield Park.
Evangelou currently sits in eighth position in the series after an up and down weekend. The Victorian driver finished 20th overall for the round, but it could have been much better, if not for a final race clash while with perennial back-marker Barry Tanton.
The Dexion Racing team battled with set-up problems through practice and qualifying, which saw him start Race 1 from a lowly 20th. As the weekend went on, though, the car got better and better. Evangelou was finished 17th in the first race, and then scored a great third place in the reverse grid race. In the all-important final, Evangelou was comfortably inside the top 10 until the lapped Tanton crashed into the front of Evangelou's ex-Ford Performance Racing Falcon at the final turn. The incident broke the steering rack of the Dexion Ford and put it out of the race.
Adam Macrow won the Wakefield round -- his second in-a-row. He has extended his series lead now to a massive 72 points ahead of Nathan Pretty and Wayne Wakefield.
The next round of the series heads to Queensland Raceway between July 21-23.
Evangelou on the Race 3 incident:
"We had a Safety Car come out and Barry Tanton was stuck in the
middle of the pack. He let two guys pass him, but he was swapping lines
heading down into the last corner. Wayne Wakefield was right in front of
me and I tried to follow him through but Tanton either lost control or
just turn in and hit me. It was a pretty decent wack. The steering rack
broke immediately and I just pulled in straight away. We are very
disappointed, as the points we lost in that race would have kept us in
sixth place in the series."
Evangelou on his third place finish in Race 2:
"There was a lot of traffic out there. We showed really consistent
pace through the race and just chipped our way through the pack. It was a
shame to lose a potential second position to Mark Porter in the end, but
he was a fair bit quicker than us this weekend. But in the end, it was
great to get up the front of the field. I'm sure we are going to be
able to that more often, both in the reverse grid races and the normal
ones."
