WEAVER NIPS PANOZ FOR MID-OHIO POLE

LEXINGTON, Ohio – James Weaver, of England, earned his first-career Can-Am pole position at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course's U.S. Road Racing Classic, edging teammate Dorsey Schroeder and GT1-class pole winner David Brabham with a lap of 1:18.200 (103.580 mph). Andy Pilgrim and Bill Auberlen took the pole in GT2 and GT3 respectively.

Weaver, driving the No. 16 Goodyear/SafetyGlow/300 Below Zero Ford Riley & Scott, teamed with Butch Leitzinger, of State College, Pa., looks to win his second-straight Can-Am race, but will have to contend with the No. 20 team car of Schroeder, of Little Torch Key, Fla., and Elliott Forbes-Robinson, of Sherrills Ford, N.C., and the No. 4 Visteon/Elan Natural Waters Panoz GTR of England's Andy Wallace and Australian David Brabham before he heads to victory circle.

"Our car has been quick all year, and it's good to start up front," said Weaver. "Our strategy in the race will be to go flat-out the whole time. The Panoz cars carry more fuel than our's, and we have to run about 0.7-second faster than the them per lap."

Brabham qualified the No. 4 Panoz only 0.292-second behind Weaver, with Schroeder between the two in the No. 20 car. The 1:18.492 (103.190 mph) pole-winning effort was Brabham's second-career USRRC GT1 pole, as he also started first at the season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona.

"We have a bit of straight-line speed on the Can-Am cars, but it's not enough," said Brabham. "Our Panoz cars keep getting better and better, and since Daytona, it's really improved. Winning GT1 is not good enough for us anymore – we want to win overall. I think they (Can-Am cars) have the advantage in traffic, but I think our Michelin tires come up to temperature quicker, and will be helpful on restarts."

Scott Schubot, of W. Palm Beach, Fla., and Henry Camferdam, of Indianapolis will start third in Can-Am. The No. 5 Panoz team car of Brazilian Raul Boesel and Frenchman Eric Bernard will start second in GT1, followed by the No. 38 Champion Motors Porsche 911 GT1 of Belgian Thierry Boutsen and France's Bob Wollek.

Andy Pilgrim, of Cooper City, Fla., ran out of gas on his pole-winning run in GT2 (his second-straight), turning a lap fast lap 1:28.234 (91.801 mph) in the No. 99 Porsche 911 Turbo shared with Larry Schumacher, of Cincinnati, Ohio. Bill Auberlen, of Redondo Beach, Fla., took his second-career GT3 pole in the No. 10 Fina/Yokohama BMW M3 he shares with Boris Said III, of Carlsbad, Calif., with a lap of 1:28.689 (91.330 mph). Cort Wagner, of Santa Monica, Calif., qualified the No. 23 AJR/Autofab Porsche 911 RSR second in GT3.

"The previous two times I've run against the No. 23 Porsche, he's out-qualified me," said Auberlen. "We tend to outrun them in the race, though. The Porsche has many advantages over the BMW, but my teammate Boris Said and I are able to run times consistent with each other and they aren't. Boris is pretty hurt though. He had a bad accident in the NASCAR Trucks race at Texas World last week and broke some ribs." The No. 1 BMW team car of Canadian Ross Bentley and Mark Simo, of Carlsbad, Calif., will start third in GT3.
