EFR, SCHROEDER WIN CAN-AM'S RETURN TO MID-OHIO

LEXINGTON, Ohio – Elliott Forbes-Robinson, of Sherrils Ford, N.C., and Dorsey Schroeder, of Little Torch Key, Fla., took their first USRRC Can-Am Championship win of the season, beating teammates James Weaver and Butch Leitzinger to the finish of the two and one-half hour Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course U.S. Road Racing Classic. Forbes-Robinson and Schroeder started second in the No. 20 Goodyear/Safety Glow/300 Below Zero Ford Riley & Scott to teammates Weaver and Leitzinger in the No. 16 team car but took charge of the race after the first hour, leading 54 of the 111 laps covered, including the final 22 tours to take a 15.170-second victory, averaging 99.367 mph. Finishing third overall, first in GT1, was the No. 4 Visteon/Elan Natural Waters Panoz GTR of Australian David Brabham and England's Andy Wallace. "I've been here quite a few times now, and it's great to be back at Mid-Ohio," said Forbes-Robinson, who has now scored Can-Am wins in the historic and modern Can-Am eras. "This is a track that I'm comfortable at. It's a great place to race and a great place for the fans. The only problem we had was my pit lane speed violation. The team told me to go as fast as I could, and I assumed that meant pit lane as well." Leitzinger immediately put the No. 16 in front of the field for the first 43 minutes, until a pit stop stall due to a broken clutch put the No. 38 Champion/STP Porsche 911 GT1 car of Belgian Thierry Boutsen and France's Bob Wollek out front. After pitting, the Porsche relinquished the lead to Forbes-Robinson and Schroeder, who controlled the remainder of the event. Brabham led overall briefly between pit stops in the GT1 Panoz, and won the GT1 class by two laps over teammates Raul Boesel, of Brazil, and Eric Bernard of France. Boutsen and Wollek dropped to third in class, five laps down, after replacing a brake rotor. "The Visteon Panoz got better and better as the race went on and the Michelin tires were exceptional," said Brabham, who completed the clean sweep of pole, overall fastest race lap and win. "I treated every lap like a qualifying lap, and all the equipment and team was there to back me up." Andy Pilgrim, of Cooper City, Fla., and Larry Schumacher, of Cincinnati, Ohio, took GT2 honors in the No. 99 Schumacher Racing Porsche 911 GT2, followed by point leaders Scott Sansone, of Coconut Creek, Fla., and Cameron Worth, of Lighthouse Pt., Fla. Bill Auberlen, of Redondo Beach, Fla., and Boris Said III, of Carlsbad, Calif., took class honors in GT3 in the Yokohama/Fina BMW M3, followed by teammates Mark Simo, of Carlsbad, Calif., and Canada's Ross Bentley.
