The Dutchman, whose best result in Dakar has been 11th in both 2011 and 2013 so far, was third in Monday's opening stage and then took a confident win in Tuesday's 284km run.

MAN's Peter Versluis led the way until CP2, but ended up having to settle for third with Kamaz driver Dmitry Sotnikov, who is also second overall, beating him as well.

Versluis was closely followed by Iveco's reigning champion Gerard De Rooy and Federico Villagra.

However, third overall is held by Martin Kolomy (Tatra), who was fastest in Monday's opener but only finished eighth in Stage 2.

De Rooy and Versluis are nine and 18 seconds adrift in fourth and fifth respectively with Siarhei Viazovich (MAZ) sitting sixth.

Villagra, Hans Stacey (MAN), Eduard Nikolaev (Kamaz) and Artur Ardavichius (MAN) rounded out the top 10, which are separated by less than five minutes.

Ton van Genugten (Iveco), second on Monday, dropped well down the order after losing 13 minutes.
