Dakar hazards continue
The Dakar Rally has had it's share of problems over the past few days starting on Thursday, January 9 during stage eight, when the Nissan XX car driven by Kenjiro Shinozuka with co-driver Thierry Delli-Zotti rolled over causing injuries to both men.
The Dakar Rally has had it's share of problems over the past few days starting on Thursday, January 9 during stage eight, when the Nissan XX car driven by Kenjiro Shinozuka with co-driver Thierry Delli-Zotti rolled over causing injuries to both men. Delli-Zotti and Shinozuka were flown to Tunisia and surgery was performed on Shinozuka who suffered from facial damage. Delli-Zotti remains in stable, good condition. Shinozuka remains in Tunisia hospital in stable but guarded condition and will be moved to a hospital in Europe possibly on Monday, January 13.
The same day, rider Alfie Cox, KTM rider, cracked his shoulder when he fell. He was treated at the medical center and returned home to South Africa Saturday night.
Stage nine on Friday saw another rider injured. This time it was the Telefonica Repsol KTM rider Joan Roma who sustained a back injury. Roma was flown to Cairo in satisfactory condition.
Yesterday was the "black day" in Lybia when driver Daniel Nebot's Toyota flipped on it's roof during stage ten. His co-driver, Bruno Cauvy was pronounced dead at the scene. Nebot is in good condition.
In addition on Saturday, KTM rider Jaap Van der Kooy was injured in a solo accident. The rider was 71st Motobikes overall prior to stage ten today. Ven der Kooy underwent surgery for a basin fracture and is listed in satisfactory condition.
Today, Sunday 11 January, brings another injury when early this morning Rally Raid UK Honda rider Patsy Quick crashed. Quick is undergoing surgery for a ruptured spleen at the medical center in Siwa.
The rally organizers had to stop competitors from going through one section at the Lybia and Egypt border due to an explosion that destroyed a back wheel of the KTM Austria team's M.A.N truck during stage 11 today. The three members of the team are okay; they were seventh Truck overall after stage ten. The truck is being moved to a secure area.
UPDATE ON COMPETITION STOPPAGE:
Hubert Auriol, Competition Director and Christian Noel, Medical Center Director held a press conference to update the situation at the border between Lybia and Egypt. Both have been in discussions with the Egyptian authorities. It has been confirmed that the earlier explosion to the rear wheel of the No. 416 truck was caused by a mine in the Egyptian border territory. All vehicles behind the incident are still stopped and will remain in a safe bivouac until the Egyptian authorities removed the truck and declare the zone is safe.
