Still in shock following the passing of Thierry Sabine, the 1986 Dakar continued on toward the Senegalese capital city. In the car category, the Porsches took a clear cut advantage from the Mitsubishis, but experienced great disappointment two days before the finish, on their way to Saint Louis. René Metge and Dominique Lemoyne got bogged down in the mud and spent more than hour extricating their Porsche 959 out of the mire. However, they kept their cool because they still had a comfortable lead from their team mates Jacky Ickx and Claude Brasseur.
