CORDOVA IL - SUMMIT FastNews - Friday's first day of qualifying for the IHRA Amalie Oil Summer Nationals put the newly-repaved Cordova Dragway Park racing surface through its paces and by the time the day was done, the track record book was rewritten. Bill Furr led the eight-bike Screaming Eagles Top Fuel Harley category after one qualifying session, clocked at a track record 6.744 seconds and 196.93 mph.

Fred Hahn posted a 6.350 second, 221.46 mph effort on his first of two qualifying runs for Pro Modified cars, resetting the track record and putting his '54 Corvette replica atop the qualifying order. Landon Jordan sits on the bubble, sixteenth at 6.570 seconds with two more rounds of qualifying scheduled for Saturday. Chris Holbrook heads the sixteen-car Pro Stock field, his '97 Ford Probe clocked at 6.765 seconds and 207.18, with the top ten qualifiers all under the previous track record. 1998 champion Von Smith continues to show a hot hand in Alcohol Funny Car, atop that ladder with a 5.983 second, 234.41 mph effort. Only Smith cracked into the fives Friday. Larry Snyder continued his domination of the Super Eliminator category with two strong runs Friday, the best a 6.167 at 220.04, again a track record. Two more rounds of qualifying Saturday, the second during the "Night of Fire," will set the fields for Sunday's eliminations.
