Haddock stays on top after first-round exit in Tulsa
TULSA (August 25, 2008) -- Terry Haddock, driver of the Lend America Stratus, maintained his lead position in the IHRA Funny Car points-race following his first-round exit in the Sooner Nationals on Sunday.
Matched up with No. 6 qualifier Todd Simpson, Haddock took the early lead in the race to half-track but lost ground when the engine broke allowing Simpson to pass him for the win. At the stripe it was Simpson 5.183/266.58, Haddock 5.236/275.96.
"Overall, it was a good weekend although I'm disappointed we weren't able to go rounds like we needed to," Haddock said. "We qualified really well at number two, and were on track to keep things moving forward, but didn't quite make it.
"We were on a really good pass against Simpson, but we suffered a mechanical problem and broke a lifter, which caused us to drop a couple of holes and let him win."
Haddock maintains a 23-point lead over Paul Lee and a 51-point spread over Matt Hagan after the Tulsa event.
"I'd say that I'm very optimistic, despite the close points race. We've done really well all season, and now that we've got Mike Ashley and Lend America supporting us through the next few races, we can concentrate on keeping our lead and winning the championship," Haddock said.
