The Italian secured the front row spot by just 0.004s and 0.005s over top Mercedes driver Robert Wickens, the leader for most of the qualifying, and Jamie Green (Audi).
Mike Rockenfeller brought a fourth Audi into the top five, ahead of Mercedes duo Christian Vietoris and Paul di Resta in sixth and seventh.
Miguel Molina (Audi) was eighth, followed by Mattias Ekstrom (Audi) and Marco Wittmann, the 2014 champion ending the session as top BMW, almost four tenths off the pace.
