After a disappointing season opener at Hockenheim, which left him without a point, Wickens recovered with a second place in Saturday's race at Lausitz.

He carried his strong form into Sunday's qualifying as well, as the time of 1m16.299s he set after the chequered flag fell was enough to take his first pole of the season.

Wickens denied Blomqvist pole, the BMW driver taking the lead from Maxime Martin in the second half of the session.

He improved his benchmark even further, but ended up less than three hundredths short of Wickens' time.

Audi's Jamie Green was only three thousandths behind Blomqvist, as Mercedes driver Gary Paffett brought a third Briton into the top four.

Martin, who held provisional pole during the mid-session pitstops, couldn't improve in the second half and had to settle for fifth.

Audi trio Rene Rast, who scored his maiden DTM podium on Saturday, Nico Muller and Mattias Ekstrom took sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.

The top 10 was rounded out by BMW's Augusto Farfus and reigning champion Marco Wittmann.

Lucas Auer, who is leading the championship by 34 points, was only 15th, more than half a second off the pace.
