Nurburgring DTM: Wickens wins Race 2, Auer spins out

Robert Wickens was victorious in the second DTM race at the Nurburgring, leading a Mercedes 1-2 ahead of stablemate Paul di Resta.

Wickens took the lead after he passed previous race leader Marco Wittmann right after the BMW driver's pitstop, the Canadian leading the way after all the tyre changes panned out.

The duo remained close for several laps with Wittmann once attempting to make a move that resulted in the two cars making minor contact at Turn 1, before the German lost ground and dropped behind di Resta.

The Scotsman was the leader of the race from second on the grid for the first 14 laps before giving up the place to pole-sitter Wittmann, who pitted a lap later and lost the lead to Wickens.

Di Resta pitted on the same lap but had a slow stop, rejoining behind BMW duo Augusto Farfus and Tom Blomqvist.

He quickly dispatched the aforementioned duo, and made quick work of demoting Wittmann as well when the reigning champion started to struggle.

Wickens crossed the line with a gap of 0.3 seconds over the charging di Resta, as Wittmann completed the podium thanks to stablemate Bruno Spengler not challenging him during the final laps.

Maro Engel took fifth ahead of the late-stopping Audi duo of Jamie Green and Mattias Ekstrom.

Timo Glock was involved in an incident with Nico Muller, who he hit under braking at the chicane.

While Muller's Audi was seriously damaged, Glock's BMW survived relatively unscathed and the former F1 driver made it home in eighth.

Farfus's BMW and the Mercedes of Gary Paffett completed the top 10.

With his sixth-place finish, Ekstrom extended his championship lead by eight points thanks to Lucas Auer making a mistake and dropping to the back of the field.

The Austrian was running third when he spun coming out of Mercedes Arena, and could only take 13th.

Meanwhile, Rene Rast, who started from last after getting a five-place grid penalty, lost more time with a poor pitstop at the end of the opening lap, and went on to finish 12th.
