However, the 20-minute session did not go well for other title contender Mattias Ekstrom who missed out on a top-10 spot on the grid and ended up in 18th only.

“We tried everything but it’s very close”, Ekstrom said. “And when you don’t hit the sweet spot with such a heavy car, this is it. Now we try again to do our best in the race. Certainly, we have some homework to do.”

With Ekstrom in the back of the field, Wehrlein has a good chance to extent his overall lead over the former DTM champion. “It’s a good result," Wehrlein said. “A lot is possible from third on the grid. I need a good start and a good pit stop.”

At the front of the grid, though, Farfus is eager to shine even more in today’s 60-minute race. “It’s a fantastic day already," he said after his 1m20.632s lap at Oschersleben earned him his fifth DTM pole position. “I’ve been always competitive here. Now let’s bring it home.”

Farfus and his BMW teammate Tom Blomqvist will take the start from the first row of the grid with Wehrlein and Antonio Felix da Costa lining up behind them.

Paul di Resta, Marco Wittmann, Timo Glock, Christian Vietoris rounded out the top eight in today’s qualifying session with the best Audi of Miguel Molina claiming ninth position in front of Gary Paffett’s Mercedes.
