Class win for Fisken at Silverstone 24 Hours

Scottish racing driver Gregor Fisken described the Silverstone Britcar 24 Hours as 'a fabulous 24 hours of motor racing' after securing a memorable class-win at the weekend.

The Le Mans Series regular, who owns the London-based historic automobile dealership Fiskens, teamed up with Piers Masarati, Andy Demetriou and Jimmy Brodie to pilot a Porsche 964 RS to ninth overall and victory in Class 1 of Britcar's showpiece event.

The win came despite the Porsche's race engine breaking during qualifying leaving the team having to run a standard road car engine and gearbox in the race. It also meant they started on the back row of the 59-car grid, but solid progress through the night saw them up to third-in-class at sunrise. An early morning push saw them take the class lead, and whilst they were pushed hard by the CWS Racing BMW M3, the team boasted a five lap winning margin at the chequered flag.

"The car went very well indeed and was great fun to drive," Fisken said. "We had some really bad luck beforehand, losing the race engine, and because we were running with a standard engine and gearbox we decided to only use 3rd, 4th and 5th gears to reduce the risk of overloading the gearbox.

"We decided what pace we would run at and stuck to it, but on Sunday morning, having gotten through the night, we realised we were in contention for the class-win. From that moment we upped the pace and enjoyed a real battle from about 8am right until the flag."

Fisken reserved special praise for the team. "At 15 or 16 years-old, ours was probably the oldest car in the race," he said. "However, it was beautifully prepared and full credit goes to the owner Andy Demetriou and also Piers Masarati who assembled a superb team to look after the car. I think we proved to be a big, big surprise to a lot of people with more modern machinery.

He also revealed that, regardless of a terrific victory, he thoroughly enjoyed the whole Bricar event.

"The spirit between everyone and throughout the whole weekend was superb and represented grass roots motorsport at its very best. All in all it was a fabulous 24 hours motor racing."

Gregor returns to Silverstone this weekend for Round 5 of the Le Mans Series, the Silverstone 1000kms where he will join co-drivers Greg Franchi and Steve Zacchia at the wheel of Larbre Competition's Aston Martin DBR9.
