Westcoast Racing and Lechner Racing battling for top honours in 12H of Hungary

HUNGARORING (October 9th, 2010) Halfway through the third running of the 12H of Hungary, the 12-hour race for GTs, touring cars and 24h specials, the Swedish Westcoast Racing team (Richard Goransson/Stanley Dickens/Lars Sturgeno/Magnus Ohman) is leading with its BMW Z4 GT3, closely followed by the Lechner Racing-Audi R8 LMS (Philip Konig/Niki Mayr-Melnhof/Thomas Gruber/Walter Lechner jr.). After six hours of racing, both cars have completed 179 laps and have made four pit stops each.

During the third and fourth hour, the Lechner Racing-Audi R8 LMS and the Westcoast Racing-BMW Z4 GT3 were closely behind each other. An electronic problem forced the Audi to stop on the track, albeit for a few seconds only. This allowed the BMW into the lead, but in the fourth hour, the Audi came back on top again. There it stayed until well into the sixth hour, only losing its lead following a pit stop just before the halfway point,

The Red Camel Racing-Audi CR-8 (Ivo Breukers/Wolf Nathan/Bas Koeten) is leading the SP2 class in sixth place overall, one lap clear of the VDS Racing Adventures-Ford Mustang (Raphael Van Der Straten/Jose Clos). The BMW Team Hungary (Laszlo Csuti/Tanas Kovacs/Janos Vida/Gabor Weber) has a comfortable lead in the diesel class and is currently eighth in the overall standings. The Povey Motorsport-BMW M3 (Guy Povey/Graham Coombes/Geoff Kimber-Smith) is leading in A3T on the same lap as the Jordans.nl-Saker Sportscar TDI (Henk Thijsen/Ton Verkoelen/Monny Krant) is leading its class A3T in tenth place overall. In A2, the Team Sally Racing-Clio (Martin Sally/Peter Obel/Miro Hornak/Andrens Schoder) and the Monlau Competicion- Clio (Javier Hernandez Rosado/Jaime Manuel/Pepus Alonso Prieto) are first and second, only one lap apart.

The first official retirement of the race was the Intersport Racing BMW (Kevin Clarke/Wayne Gibson). After two and a half hours, the Lammertink Racing with Toyo Tires-Porsche 997 Cup (Tom Coronel/Takayuki Kinoshita/Yasushi Kikuchi) caused the first Code 60 of the race. A piston had damaged the engine block and the engine caught fire as a result. For the fire to be extinguished and the car to be recovered, the clerk of the course decided to neutralise the race for a while, imposing a maximum speed of 60 kph for all cars on the track. After ten minutes, during which many teams opted to make their pit stops a little bit earlier than scheduled in order to save time, all competitors were allowed to race at normal speed again. The Porsche was damaged beyond repair, so it had to be added to the list of retirements.

The James Watt Automotive team (Paul Daniels/Robert Bell/Darryl O'Young) that had shone in the early stages of the race, dropped well down the order in the fourth hour when its Porsche was pushed into the pits with clutch problems. "Replacing the clutch would have taken too long, so that was it for us", said team owner Paul Daniels, confirming the team's official retirement.
