The German, who is contesting Formula E in 2017/18 with Techeetah, is hoping that he will line up with Porsche in the Nurburgring 24 Hours next May in its latest 911 GT3-R contender.
An attack on the German endurance classic would be part of a limited programme offered to him by Porsche in the wake of the end of its LMP1 project in the FIA World Endurance Championship.
Porsche has promised to keep all six of its LMP1 drivers from 2017 under contract in 2018, including new Toro Rosso F1 driver Brendon Hartley.
Lotterer told Motorsport.com: "I've done the Nurburgring 24 Hours before in a low-key way and I love the experience of racing on the Nordschleife.
"Now I'd like to try to win it, because I'm always looking for new challenges — I have Macau [the GT World Cup] on my mind, too."
Lotterer has raced in the 24 Hours at the Nurburgring on three previous occasions, driving for Toyota's Gazoo Racing squad in 2009-11, each time racing a V10-engined Lexus LF-A.
The German's experience of GT3 machinery includes five assaults on the Spa 24 Hours during his seven-year stint with Audi's LMP1 squad.
He raced Audi R8 LMS GT3s at Spa in 2012-15 and again this year, with a best result of third in 2013.
Porsche is expected to announce programmes for all its drivers at its annual awards ceremony at its Weissach development centre on December 9.
