In perfect weather conditions, the top 30 cars were allowed two laps of the Nordschleife, leaving the grid with gaps between them.

On the opening lap, Stefan Mucke set the benchmark at 8m21.588s for Aston Martin, but Maxime Martin beat that with 8m20.464s in his Marc VDS BMW Z4 GT3.

Lance David Arnold was first to dip under the 8m20s barrier, setting 8m19.592s in his Bentley Continental.

Then BMW truly came to the fore, led by Farfus in #26 Marc VDS BMW who set a sensational 8m17.531s on his first flying lap. The Schubert-run Z4s also jumped up to second and third.

Improvements among the big guns seemed few and far between on the second laps, but right at the end of the session the #2 Black Falcon Mercedes SLS went second quickest with Adam Christodoulou.

Farfus didn’t need to improve on his second lap, but did so anyway. The Brazilian lowered the pole time to 8m17.394s, 0.947s faster than Christodoulou who will start second.

Jens Klingmann was third fastest in his Schubert-run BMW, ahead of teammate Dirk Muller.

Pierre Kaffer was top Audi in fifth, 1.6s off the pace, ahead of the second Marc VDS car of Martin.

Arnold was the top Bentley in eighth, behind Audi DTM ace Nico Muller.
