Nurburgring 24 Hours: Mercedes heads BMW and Aston
The second qualifying session for the Nurburgring 24 Hours has concluded with five different manufacturers in the top five positions ahead of today’s pole position shootout.
In the closing minutes of Friday morning’s drying qualifying session, the Black Falcon Mercedes of Yelmer Buurman/Andreas Simonsen/Adam Christodoulou/Bernd Schneider lowered the best time to 8m20.034s with a relatively clear lap of the daunting Nordschleife circuit.
The Marc VDS BMW of Augusto Farfus/Jorg Muller/Nicky Catsburg/Dirk Adorf set the second fastest lap, 2.874s off the pace, with three minutes remaining.
Another late improvement was the Aston Martin of Stefan Mucke/Darren Turner/Pedro Lamy/Richie Stanaway moving up to third, 3.5s off the fastest time.
Bentley and Audi made it five marques in the top five positions, while Thursday’s pacesetting squad of Christopher Haase/ Christian Mamerow/Rene Rast/Markus Winkelhock in the Phoenix-run Audi slipped to seventh on 8m26.486s.
The session wasn’t a true reflection of the pace, however, as some cars were already pre-qualified for this afternoon’s Top 30 shootout.
