Fangio Ferrari sold for $28 million

A 1956 Ferrari driven by five-time Formula 1 world champion Juan Manuel Fangio was sold for $28 million at an auction on Thursday.

The Ferrari 290 MM, built to contest in the World Sportscar Championship, was part of an RM Sotheby's auction that included a Porsche owned by Janis Joplin and a Pontiac which belonged to Roy Rogers.

Only four 290 MMs were bult by the Italian company, one of them winning the Mille Miglia with Eugenio Castellotti at the wheel in 1956.

Fangio finished fourth in that event.

The following year, the car won the Buenos Aires 1000 km race with Castellotti, Luigi Musso and Masten Gregory behind the wheel.

The car had been owned by collector Pierre Bardinon for 34 years.

RM Sotheby's identified the new owner of the car as a private European collector.

  • Buenos Aires 1000 KM, Argentina, 1957 - Masten Gregory, Luigi Musso, Eugenio Castellotti - 1st Overall
  • Portuguese Grand Prix, Portugal, 1957 - Masten Gregory - 2nd Overall
  • Grand Prix of Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, 1957 - Masten Gregory - 10th Overall
  • Nassau Tourist Trophy, Bahamas, 1957 - Joakim Bonnier - 3rd Overall
  • Governor's Trophy, Bahamas, 1957 - Joakim Bonnier - 6th Overall
  • Nassau Memorial Trophy, Bahamas, 1957 - Joakim Bonnier - 7th Overall
