During a wet qualifying session at Monza, Lewis Hamilton scored his 69th pole position, surpassing Michael Schumacher's record. Schumacher claimed his final pole position at the 2006 French Grand Prix.

Hamilton became the seventh driver to hold the most pole positions record. Giuseppe Farina, Juan Manuel Fangio, Alberto Ascari, Jim Clark (photo), Ayrton Senna and Schumacher all held it at one stage.

Although he originally qualified fourth, penalties for the Red Bull duo promoted Williams' Lance Stroll to second on the grid. With this result, he became F1's youngest ever front-row starter (18 years, 10 months and six days), beating previous record holder Max Verstappen by just 23 days.

Before Stroll, Jacques Villeneuve was the last Canadian driver to start a race from front of the grid in 1998. Coincidentally, he was also driving a Williams at Monza.

Force India's Esteban Ocon set the fifth fastest time in qualifying, but was elevated to third because of penalties for rivals. It was his best starting position in his short F1 career.

Hamilton notched his 59th career victory at Monza. He became the first driver in 2017 to win back-to-back races, having also won the Belgian GP a week ago.
