German GP stats: Hamilton equals another Schumacher record

Sebastian Vettel scored his 55th F1 pole position on Saturday, just 10 shy of Ayrton Senna's tally and another 11 adrift of Lewis Hamilton's record of 76. It was 218th pole for Ferrari as a constructor and 219th as an engine supplier.

Vettel also set a new outright lap record at Hockenheim, a 1m11.212s, nearly three seconds quicker than Michael Schumacher's 2004 time of 1m13.306s.

Hamilton recovered from technical issues in qualifying to notch up his 66th F1 win. It was also Mercedes' 80th win as a constructor and 166th as an engine manufacturer.

Prior to the German GP, Hamilton had never won a race from below sixth on the grid. He, however, managed to finish on the 2014 Hungarian GP podium after starting dead last in 22nd.

Apart from Hamilton, only five other drivers have managed to win a race from 14th on the grid in the history of F1. Their names are Bob Sweikert (Indianapolis 1955), Alan Jones (Austrian GP 1977), Olivier Panis (Monaco 1996), Johnny Herbert ( European GP 1999) and Jenson Button (Hungarian GP 2006, pictured). Apart from the 1955 Indy 500, all other races were affected by rain.

Hamilton equalled Schumacher's record of four German GP wins. He has previously won in Germany in 2008, 2011 and 2016.

Interestingly, it was Hamilton's 44th victory with 44 as his car number. 44 is F1's seventh most successful car number after #1, #5 , #2, #6, #3 and #8.

Hamilton set the fastest lap of the race, a 1m15.545s, on the penultimate tour. It was the 39th fastest lap of his grand prix career.

Valtteri Bottas secured his 27th F1 podium at Hockenheim, equalling the tallies of Bruce McLaren and Ralf Schumacher.

With Hamilton winning and Bottas finishing second, Mercedes secured only its second 1-2 finish of the season after the Spanish GP - and it's first ever on home turf.

Kimi Raikkonen finished behind the Mercedes pair in third, notching up his 98th F1 podium. He's now ahead of Fernando Alonso in the list of most podium finishers and only behind Schumacher (155), Hamilton (125), Alain Prost (106) and Vettel (105).

Nico Hulkenberg, Renault Sport F1 Team R.S. 18

With fifth, Nico Hulkenberg recorded his best finish in F1 since the 2016 Belgian GP, where he finished fourth. It was also his best finish in Germany, his home country.

With sixth, Romain Grosjean scored his first ever points at Hockenheim.

For the third consecutive race, both Force India drivers finished in the points. Sergio Perez was classified seventh, just ahead of teammate Esteban Ocon.
