Result: Fifth and 10th

Force India’s Sergio Perez was one of the biggest gainers of the first lap incident between Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen and and Max Verstappen - which set off a chain reaction that led to several other drivers to retire from the race.

Having started the race from 12th on the grid, Perez was able to navigate his way through the opening lap melee and catapult himself to fourth place.

When the Safety Car was deployed for a second time following Daniil Kvyat’s crash, Perez pitted for a set of intermediate tyres. Not all drivers around him stopped, however, including Carlos Sainz Jr and Valtteri Bottas, with both getting the jump on the Mexican.

But with Nico Hulkenberg retiring due to a hydraulics issue, the 27-year-old was able to finish a creditable fifth and equal Verstappen’s points tally.

Meanwhile, Esteban Ocon in the sister Force India had a less spectacular race, but could still finish inside the points in 10th.

Result: Victory

Gaurav Gill took a commanding win in the penultimate round of 2017 Asia-Pacific Rally Championship in Japan to take over the lead in the drivers’ standings.

Gill won 14 out of 17 stages over a span of three days to claim an emphatic 11m41.4s victory over MPart Mitsubishi’s Robert Blomberg.

The 35-year-old was aided by MRF teammate Ole Christian Veiby retiring in SS3, although the Norwegian came back and drove in Leg 2.

The Japan win was Gill’s second in 2017 and puts him in a strong position to clinch back-to-back APRC titles when the championship heads to India late in November.

Chennai’s Sandeep Kumar swept the final MRF F1600 of the weekend on home turf, but couldn’t prevent Anindith Reddy from clinching the title.

Having won six of the first 10 races, Reddy had a comfortable buffer in hand coming into the final round.

Hence, even though he scored only a single podium in the final round’s triple-header, it was enough to claim his second single-seater title in as many years.

Karminder Singh was crowned the Volkswagen Ameo Cup champion in the final round of the season in Chennai.

Karminder struggled for pace in qualifying, leaving him eighth for the first race of the weekend. After initially making ground on rivals, he dropped down to seventh place.

The Delhi-based driver, however, bounced back in Race 2, taking an emphatic 12 second victory after starting from the front row of the grid.

With his chief rivals finishing some way behind, the 24-year-old sealed the title with one race to spare.
