Mercedes unleashes radical barge boards

Mercedes unleashed some of its radical new parts during the second day of Formula 1 testing at Barcelona in Spain on Tuesday.

The team had hinted that it would start delivering performance updates from this morning, as it builds to ensure its W07 maintains it place at the front of the F1 field.

And, amid speculation about there being an innovative nose coming, Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff said on Monday that some stand-out bits would be arriving.

"We are having some bits which are slightly unusual," said Wolff after the first day. "We are not sure whether they come on the car tomorrow or after tomorrow.

"It depends on the analysis of the data from today was, but certainly some things to look at. Certainly when I saw it the first time I was surprised."

Mercedes duly delivered on Tuesday, with Nico Rosberg emerging from the pits with a radical serrated bargeboard concept appearing on his car.

There is no sign yet of a new nose configuration though.

Tech motivation

By Matt Somerfield

These new, full length serrated bargeboards are mounted on strakes that extend forward of the bargeboards and meet with the floor behind.

On their own, the bargeboards are more aggressive than we have seen teams use before, with the airflow in that region now being heavily manipulated to improve performance.

Meanwhile, the strakes are undoubtedly aimed at straightening the airflow and improving how it moves under the floor, helping to seal the diffuser's edge and improve global performance.

The nightmare timing that now hinders Mercedes

Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton took victory at the Bahrain Grand Prix despite, for a change, not having the quickest car. But any hopes of developing its W12 to surpass Red Bull's RB16B in terms of outright speed could not have come at a worse time.
