Amid calls from Red Bull and Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone to equalise the performance of the power units to avoid Mercedes from winning easily again in 2015, Prost reckons the German manufacturer should be given credit for the job that is doing.
Prost, a Renault brand ambassador since 2012, said the current complaints against Mercedes' dominance are a normal part of Formula One.
"I'm not particularly negative," Prost told Motorsport.com about Mercedes' current domination of F1.
"Things have really evolved, though. We're reaching the end of a cycle, in a certain way.
"It's true there are issues. People don't accept it anymore when someone dominates and do a good job. That's not F1, that's competition!
"Mercedes prepared themselves for three, four years to be that good. Unfortunately, it will maybe take two or three years to catch them, but that's part of the game!
"Everything that's going on in the background also with the smaller teams and their issues? That always happened."
The Frenchman remains hopeful, however, that Renault will be able to sort its problems eventually.
"Renault know they have issues. I think and I hope that will be sorted out pretty quickly, maybe within one race or two," he said.
"But it's true that's been two complicated years."
