Saudi Arabian Grand Prix Driver Ratings
An ill-tempered Saudi Grand Prix made Formula 1 more soap opera than sporting spectacle at times, but there were some strong performances up and down the field on the world championship's first visit to Jeddah
Lewis Hamilton – 8
Did well to compose himself to improve for a calm last run in Q3 having been ragged before, and ultimately claimed pole. He looked to have the best pace of the race’s early leading trio, then got caught up in every incident that followed. Did play a part in the Turn 27 crash as he could have gone by Verstappen earlier. Fastest lap with a broken front wing was impressive.
Max Verstappen – 3
Q3 crash must go down as a ‘massive error’ so he can’t score higher per our rules, especially as Verstappen then repeatedly completed bolshy race passes off-track and ultimately drew a penalty. Penalised again for the crash with Hamilton for suddenly braking hard and so his score comes down one further, but it’s bumped back up for the way he pulled off the borderline-legal start two double pass.
