Vettel dismisses Halo criticism: Nothing “justifies death”

Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel has hit back at dissent over the proposed introduction of the Halo head protection system, saying that nothing “justifies death”.

When asked in the pre-German Grand Prix press conference about those who had spoken out against its introduction, Vettel made his feelings quite clear.

"I'm a bit surprised because it doesn't sound as if we were clear about what we want for the future," said Vettel.

"We had a vote among the drivers and I think 95 percent were for it, so I don't know why all of a sudden it comes up the way it does – it gives the wrong impression.

"The majority accepts we don't like the looks of it, but I don't think there's anything really that justifies death.

"We've always learned from incidents that happened on track, and tried to improve. It would be the first time in human history that we've learned a lesson and we did not change."

Ricciardo: Halo "won't change our approach"

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo added that the benefits of the Halo should not be mistaken for making the job of the driver any easier – or eliminate all risks.

"What people from the outside need to understand is that it's going to make it safer, but the risks we take aren't any less," said Ricciardo.

"We won't change our approach to a corner, it's there to support the freak accident or if something comes flying through the air.

"It's purely to get rid of that risk, which I think it will do a good job. But for us going flat-out through Eau Rouge – that doesn't change anything."
