Weekend round-up (June 29 - July 01)

Max Verstappen took a surprise win at Red Bull’s home ground in Austria, while Mercedes suffered a catastrophic double retirement.

Hamilton led the race early on from pole-sitter Valtteri Bottas, but a decision not to pit under VSC left him in a disadvantageous position to his Red Bull and Ferrari rivals.

Ultimately, he was forced to pull his Mercedes at the side of the track with technical gremlins, with Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo’s races also ending in similar style.

That allowed Verstappen to take a comfortable win after he managed to hold off a late attack from Kimi Raikkonen. Sebastian Vettel completed the podium spots.

Force India enjoyed a strong result on its 200th F1 appearance, with Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez finishing sixth and seventh respectively.

Marc Marquez came on top in a thrilling MotoGP race at Assen after breaking away from the field in the final three laps.

Jorge Lorenzo led the early part of the race after a rocketing start from 10th on the grid, but started to fade towards the latter stages.

That allowed Marquez, who had a close brush with Alex Rins and once ran wide while battling with Maverick Vinales, to jump ahead and score his fourth win of the season.

Valentino Rossi and Vinales accompanied Marquez on the podium, both the Yamaha riders enjoying brief stint at the front of the field.

Johann Zarco was classified fourth ahead of Andrea Dovizioso, who also led the race for a brief period.

Arjun Maini qualified a strong fifth for the Austrian F2 feature race, but an early safety car wrecked his prime/option strategy.

While all of his main rivals effectively got a free stop, Maini had to pit under normal conditions in the final 10 laps of the race. As a result, he could finish no higher than 15th.

In Sunday’s sprint race, he made decent progress from 15th on the grid to cross the line in 10th, just a second away from the final points-paying position.

Aditya Patel scored a pair of seventh place results at the Suzuka round of Blancpain GT Asia championship.

The OD Racing Audi driver and his teammate Mitch Gilbert made particular headways in Race 2, rising up from 20th on the grid to finish seventh.

Armaan Ebrahim and Anindith Reddy (Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia, Japan)

Armaan Ebrahim and Anindith Reddy raced as teammates in the third round of Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia series in Japan, finishing sixth and seventh in the two races.

The two drivers were competing for D1 Racing, a team run by Top Speed Racing.
