Bonanomi, an... happy ending
The trip to Barcelona, the last stop for the 2008 Renault World Series, has been defi- netely not an easy one for Marco Bonanomi. The Comtec driver, thanks to the good job done during the free practise, did well in qualifying, grabbing the fourth valuable posi- tion in the Superpole. But as rain started at the very beginning of the first session, the italian experienced an aquaplaning while he was running on the stright. His car hit the wall with the rear, and Bonanomi got the permission to race only after a medical check-up.
Later on, due to the heavy rain the Superpole has been cancelled, and the grid determined by the qualifying results. As considered in the WSA sport regulation, Bonanomi started in the front row in race 1. He didn't start so well, and he quickly lost few positons. Afer the collision between Fauzy and Molina he reagained the second position behind Aleshin. When Bonanomi, at lap 11, tried a move on the right side, and the russian driver did the same in order to block him, an appalling impact occurred.
Bonanomi's singleseater literally took off, flying upside down and hitting a pole, then landing on the side at the end of the pit-lane. Fortunately the driver from Lecco did not suffer any serious injury, but obviously he could not partecipate to race 1 since his Dallara was devastated by the accident. A possible win stolen by the bad luck: that's the end of Bonanomi's run in the 2008 Renault World Series.
