Guillaume Moreau calls a halt to his WSR season

Guillaume Moreau has decided to break off his collaboration with the KTR Team in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series after a disappointing Hungarian weekend. The driver from the Limousin region no longer has any chance of winning the title, and has decided to concentrate on his endurance programme while keeping an eye out for any single-seater opportunities that may arise.

Guillaume Moreau was still aiming for a morale-boosting result after his Spa-Francorchamps podium finish, and had high hopes for the Hungaroring meeting. "Last year I took a comfortable pole position here and I'd have won the race had it not been for a strategy error." Unfortunately, Guillaume soon discovered that his chances of a good result in the fifth round of the season varied from slim to non-existent. "In free practice my car was so difficult to drive that I couldn't avoid an off on Thursday morning. Just to make things worse the car caught fire on the tow truck and I wasn't able to run in the afternoon! We barely improved our performance in Friday's free practice, and I began qualifying knowing that I wouldn't be able to do battle with the front-runners."

Guillaume set a very disappointing time at the wheel of a car that was still handling badly. "During my career I've never been so far back on the grid in normal conditions. I don't know if the team can react quickly enough to give me a competitive machine but my weekend's already gone down the tubes!"

The No.17 Formula Renault 3.5 was quicker at the start of the race due to a modified set-up. Guillaume was fighting his way into the top 10 when he lost his rear wing sending him into immediate retirement. He was again at the back of the grid for the following day's event and was punted off in the first corner by Pippa Mann.

A very disappointed Guillaume gave himself a few days to think before taking the decision to call a halt to his season. "I stated that my aim was to fight for the title. Halfway through the year I've got no chance seeing how far back I am, and I'm just not interested in being an also-ran. The team's disappointed: I am too but it's the best decision, as I don't see any other solution. We've never really been competitive with the 2008 car."

He is still hoping to bounce back and put this disappointment behind him. "First of all, I'm going to concentrate on the end of the season in the Le Mans Series with Luc Alphand Adventures. We're well on the way to winning the LM GT1 title and we've got two races left to do the job. On the other hand, if a good opportunity in single-seaters comes up I'll take it whether it's in FR 3.5 or GP2 or anywhere else. I think I'm still well capable of fighting at the front."
