Winkelhock joins the world of F1

The 25-year-old German driver Markus Winkelhock, who finished third in the World Series by Renault 2005, has signed an agreement with Midland F1 Team to become the UK-based outfit's third driver for 2006.

After testing with the team in Jerez at the end of the 2005 season, Markus Winkelhock finally got the chance to sign his first Formula 1 contract. The agreement means he will be able to take part in testing during the Friday free practice sessions throughout the season, providing him with a great opportunity to show his potential.

Markus had a brilliant 2005 season, battling for the World Series by Renault crown with Polish driver Robert Kubica (who also recently signed for a F1 team) and the Spaniard Adrian Valles.

Winkelhock ended up taking third position in the overall standings, but the general impression of his performance in a very competitive championship was good enough to attract interest from the world of F1.

Son of Manfred Winkelhock, the legendary former F1 driver, Markus has already shown he is determined to become part of this huge sport. Now he has been given the challenge to match his ambitions.
