Coloni drivers impress in Jerez test
February 23, 2004 -- Jose Maria Lopez clocked the fastest time in the first official FIA Formula 3000 International Championship test of the season in Jerez last week, as Coloni Motorsport's drivers all posted impressive performances at the Spanish track.
Lopez, from Argentina and a member of the Renault Driver Development programme, posted a quickest time of 1m31.770s during the three-day test to edge out the Arden Motorsport pairing of Vitantonio Liuzzi and Robert Doornbos.
"We had a very good test and I was very satisfied with the performance of all my drivers," said team owner Paolo Coloni. "Lopez was very quick throughout the test but all the team did well and we achieved all the elements of our programme, including good short stints and race distances on full tanks of fuel."
Jeffrey van Hooydonk, driving for the Coloni outfit, was an impressive fourth fastest, while Turkish rookie Can Artam set the 12th fastest time on the final day aboard his Coloni Motorsport-tended machine. New signing Mathias Lauda who, like Artam, was testing for the first time alongside his main championship rivals, showed extremely well, netting the third quickest time on the first day, although a small mistake prevented him from claiming a faster time aboard his CMS-run Lola.
"It was a shame for Mathias because he could not express all his potential," added Coloni. "He went wide at a corner, clipped a kerb and damaged his front wing which was shame as he was running on new tyres at the time and therefore could not set the kind of time he was capable of."
Chanoch Nissany also tested for the Coloni team as the Italian operation moves towards finalising its driver line-up for the 2004 season.
The Coloni squad will test again in Magione, Italy, today (Monday Febrary 23) and tomorrow. The next official test takes place at Silverstone on March 23-24.
