Janis fastest, lays a claim on the pole

The first qualifying session in Monza went much the same way as yesterday's free practice, with Janis setting the fastest time from the Trophy leader Luca Filippi and Ricci for Astromega. The Ma-con's Czech driver recorded the fastest time at the beginning of the session, afterwards awaiting his opponents performance at the pits. Ciompi was fourth, ahead of Rocha, Vilander and Engel. Caceres was eighth, ahead of the first Light driver, Gattuso, while Auinger stayed ahead of the other three light drivers, respectively Di Cienzo, Solieri and Chiminelli. Piccini was forced back to the pits after a lap because of an engine gremlin which had already plagued his car yesterday.

Commentary - The two Fisichella Motorsport drivers, Engel for Durango and Janis are the first ones to take to the track. Janis on his first lap sets a time of 1'40"486, then Filippi takes the lead with a time of 1'39"956, to which Janis answers with 1'39"266. After Janis and Filippi Engel, Ciompi, Ricci and Auinger for Sighinolfi. In the meanwhile Ricci records a time under 1'40", just after Filippi, who also improved his time. At this point Vilander starts his session. Half way through the session Janis is still in the lead followed by Filippi, Ricci e Rocha Tuka who holds the fourth fastest time, 1'40"100, preceding Engel, Ciompi and Vilander. 10 minutes before the end of the session the Tuscan driver of team Fisichella takes fourth place from Rocha Tuka behind the Astromega driver with a Lap under the 1'40 mark, while Vilander, ends up behind the Brazilian driver. At the end the front runners don't change, Janis in first place followed by Filippi, Ricci and Ciompi.
