Formula Dodge standout Phil Giebler, a competitor in the recent Red Bull run-off, took part in an open test for the Euro3000 series at the Vallelunga circuit in Italy last week, put on by Euro3000 organizers.
"The 450-plus horsepower machines were set up equally, to give all the drivers the same feel and opportunity," Giebler relates. "We were all given the same amount of laps, which consisted of two short runs of seven laps to total 14. There was no official timing by the circuit, but all the teams were allowed to take laptimes and use data logging systems.
"I was put in the first group of drivers to test the cars and placed in Vincenzo Sospiri's team. The track was still a bit damp from the morning air. Not knowing the track or the cars, I wasn't sure what to expect. After the first two laps I felt comfortable and tried to learn as quick as I could. I was told that I was quickest in the morning by over 0.7sec. At the end of the day all the team managers and the organizers got together to compare notes, and I was quietly congratulated for unofficially being the fastest of the test!"
The test was obviously a boost for the young American racer, and although he still has no definite plans in place for next season, Giebler is concentrating his efforts on Euro3000.
"It was a good experience in every way--I learned a lot and made some good impressions," Giebler added. "It's a good way for me to go into winter as I look for the right team/championship combination and the budget to fund it."
