Chennai F4 SEA: Ghiretti scores double win in first Indian round

Chennai successfully hosted a round of the Formula 4 South East Asia championship last weekend, the first FIA-sanctioned single-seater racing event to be held in the country since the 2013 Indian Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Several drivers from Europe, Asia and even Canada took to the Madras Motor Race Track, with France’s Alessandro Ghiretti putting on the strongest show of all to grab two victories in three races.

Ghiretti started Race 1 from pole position and after resisting an early challenge from Thai driver Kane Shepherd romped to a comfortable win. Antone Potty of Belgium completed the podium spot, but finished nearly 10 seconds behind the leading duo.

The starting order for the second race of the weekend was based on reversed results from Race 1, putting Ghiretti and Shepherd eighth and seventh respectively on the grid.

However, such was their dominance that they manage to fight their way back up front in the first half of the race itself, with Ghiretti again having the upper hand as he won by three seconds from Shepherd.

Malaysian driver Muizz Musyaffa finished third, but ended Ghiretti’s dominance with a fine victory in Race 3

Musyaffa started fourth on the grid, but managed to jump up to second at the start. He then lost a position to Alister Yoong but both managed to reel in polesitter Ryo Komikado to set up a two-way showdown for victory.

Yoong ran wide at turn 12, giving Musyaffa the opportunity to cruise past him and secure victory. Kane Shepherd eventually finished second ahead of Race 1 and 2 winner Ghiretti, while Yoong was demoted to fourth in the final classifications.

Another round of the F4 SEA series will be held in Chennai this weekend, with a further three races on the cards.

Chandhok scores Caterham Asia podium

Former FMSCI President Vicky Chandhok scored two podium finishes on his one-off return to racing in the support Caterham Asia Championship event.

Chandhok even briefly led Race 1, but had to concede position to Britain’s Peter Reynolds, who went on to take victory.
