Tunjo eyeing podium finishes in Guangdong

KUALA LUMPUR (SEPT 3, 2010): Colombian racing sensation Oscar Tunjo has set his sights on making the podium of each of the four races in this weekend's Formula BMW Pacific Series at Guangdong International Circuit.

The 14-year-old, who drives for Malaysia's Meritus Grand Prix, is currently second in the overall standings with 52 points after six races of the season. He trails Richard Bradley, who has 86 points.

Tunjo, who is the youngest driver in the competition, has been impressive in his debut season, upstaging his more experienced rivals to claim several great points for Meritus.GP, who have won all seven of the previous Formula BMW team crowns.

After a close to four-month break, Meritus Grand Prix is back in action in the Formula BMW Pacific. After the Malaysian races in May, there was supposed to be four races at the Korean International Circuit from Aug 27-29 but the event was scrapped as the track is still not ready.

As such, the focus is now Guangdong on which will host four races over the weekend.

Tunjo, who had a quick trip back to Colombia to visit his parents, is fired up to close the gap on Bradley.

"This is an important weekend as there are four races. Obviously, I would love to win all the races but that is easer said that done. The main target is to finish ahead of Bradley and try to get on the podium. Winning will be a big bonus," said Tunjo.

"I'm delighted to be driving in Formula BMW and while the competition has been very tough, I have managed to score some good results to be placed second in the standings.

"My target is to help Meritus retain the team title and to do that, I have to be consistently among the front not just in this race but also in the remaining legs of the season."

From China, the series will move to Singapore as a support event for the Formula 1 race. It is an event which excites Tunjo.

"I can't wait for Singapore as it will be my first street race. I really am looking forward to it but for now, my focus is doing well in China. I have been in this country once before to do some testing but this will be my first races here and I'm very excited."
