Hungary GP3: De Vries stuns the field with last-second flyer

The Mclaren-protege set his benchmark time of 1m32.979s after the checkered flag fell, robbing Matt Parry of his first GP3 pole.

Campos Racing's Alex Palou was the early leader of the session, his time going unbeaten until halfway point.

Antonio Fuoco then took over the lead and the Ferrari junior but he was demoted by Alex Albon as the field went in for the mid-session pit stops.

The session was red-flagged with six minutes to go before the field could have improved after Steijn Schothorst's car stopped on track.

Several driver improved their times following the restart with Matt Parry taking the lead with his first flyer, the Welshman eventually topping the timesheets until the checkered flag fell.

However, Mclaren protege Nyck de Vries lowered the benchmark by nearly half a second with a last-second flyer, the Dutchman scoring his first pole.

Parry had to settle for second, just 0.014s ahead of Fuoco.

Jake Dennis secured fourth followed by ART duo Nirei Fukuzumi and Charles Lelerc.

Jack Aitken, who failed to set a representative time before the red flag, ended up seventh with Albon dropping as low as eighth.

Jenzer's Arjun Maini and Koiranen's Ralph Boschung rounded out the top 10.
