MORE POINTS FOR NEWGARDEN IN MONZA FINALE
Josef Newgarden scored his second points-finish of the weekend when he brought his Carlin car across the line fifth, in the final race of the 2010 GP3 season.
The 19 year-old racer had lined-up second on the grid, however when pole-sitter Nigel Melker was relegated to the back for causing the first start to be aborted, Newgarden had the front-row all to himself. When the race finally got underway, the young American got a good start, but was boxed in on the run down to the first chicane. Robert Wickens and Mirko Bortolotti surrounded the #14 car, and as the three of them exited the corner, Newgarden was squeezed out of contention. He dropped down into fourth place behind Roberto Merhi, and by the end of an eventful first lap, was in sixth position.
From there, Newgarden put in a consistent performance on the demanding Italian circuit. When Esteban Gutierrez spun, Newgarden was there to pick up the place, and he brought the car home for a solid fifth place finish just 4.4 seconds behind race winner Robert Wickens.
Speaking about the race, Newgarden said: "We didn't get a bad start, it was that Wickens got it right. We were side-by-side going into the chicane, but they just pushed ahead on the exit. I think we just missed the setup a little bit and couldn't quite get the tow we needed. We'd hoped for much more, but it was a solid result for myself and the team."
Reflecting on the year and looking ahead, Newgarden added: "It's been a tough season GP3 is an extremely competitive series to be running in, and I've absolutely enjoyed being part of it. So much of 2010 was new to me the car, the circuits it really has been a huge learning curve and a fantastic experience. We're now looking ahead to various winter testing opportunities, and preparing for 2011."
